An unfamiliar tail lift on a hired truck: establish what is fitted

When a hired truck arrives with a tail lift you have not used before, do not treat a familiar-looking remote as proof that you know the system. Ask the vehicle provider for the fitted lift details, its operator instructions and the required handover before using it. If there is a suspected fault, report it without experimenting.

Start with the handover records

Check the paperwork already supplied with the vehicle for the tail-lift manufacturer, model and identifying number. Compare those records with any existing equipment photographs. The truck model alone does not identify the separate lift installation.

If the information is missing, ask the hire company to supply it. Do not climb under the vehicle or approach a hazardous area to find a label. You can tell the workshop that identification is incomplete and ask which existing records would help. A missing number is better than a guessed model name.

Get instructions for this lift, not a similar one

The DHOLLANDIA manual for the US DH-S range links operation to the particular equipment and operator training. It is an example of a model-specific manual, not a substitute for instructions for whatever lift is on your hired vehicle.

Ask the provider to resolve any mismatch between the paperwork and the fitted controls. A video showing a similar lift or instructions left in the cab by a previous user may refer to another version. Do not follow an improvised control sequence to see whether it works.

Keep a fault report separate from the handover

If an abnormal response has already occurred, write down the observed action, the control involved and the platform position. Record who witnessed it. Do not operate the lift repeatedly to demonstrate the fault to a second person.

State whether the equipment is currently unused and who is responsible for arranging an assessment. An unsafe or uncertain lift should remain out of use. Qualified personnel must assess any question about safe vehicle movement; a workshop appointment alone does not settle that question.

Agree who receives the next update

Give the workshop a reachable driver contact and the hire company contact handling the vehicle. Ask who must approve an assessment or subsequent work. This article does not establish what the hire agreement covers or who is liable for a fault.

Contact the vehicle provider with the available lift details, then call the workshop before arranging a visit to Halfweg.
